Runway Report 1 – Mumbai’s Lakme Fashion Week

The Lakme Fashion Week in Bombay saw a grand opening with designers Neeta Lulla and Manish Malhotra spinning out their best and a befitting finale with the class and pure elegance of Tarun Tahiliani. om prêt to couture, there was a unique blend of color on display, right from the sacrilegious to the conventional. It was a rare treat to see taupe, beige, nude and ivory glammed up with silver and gold and shimmering Swarovski crystals and gota work at Neeta Lulla’s bridal show, which was unreservedly feminine.

Lending an edge to the soft styles were floor length jackets teamed with kurtas and saris. The fashion maestro himself, Manish Malhotra had rich, royal hues of cobalt, burgundy, red and old rose with opulent embroidery and stylized silhouettes, a shoo in to make any bride feel like a princess on her wedding day. The menswear which saw shades of beige, olive and grays, had paneled kurtas, bundgalas and stately sherwanis with a rather interesting mix of texture and embroidery.

Giving a very unique twist to bridal fashion was none other than Anamika Khanna, who had models parading in perfectly gorgeous silver and gold bridal ensembles with ‘Black’ dupattas, boldly draped across. Since the ‘black’ dupatta aspect may be considered a strict ‘no no’ at some bridal functions, one can always play with another vivid color to go with the stunning bridal lehengas.

Mid week saw designer Rocky S present a very unusual and chic all men’s line with Tarun Tahiliani bringing in the finale with an array of beautifully fashioned drapes, togas, shimmering sequined gowns and majestic saris. A synchrony of regal styles and modern separates, the designers creative touch and beautiful craftsmanship was clearly visible in men’s and women’s couture bridal wear as well as the tailored boleros, shirts and trousers with ethnic accents.
